When a team uses the 1-4-4-2 formation against an opposing team playing in a 1-5-3-2 formation, full-backs must reposition towards central areas of the pitch to help the centre-backs and outnumber the opposing strikers. Full-backs must also move forwards and join the midfield to match the number of opponents in that area of the field. One way to outnumber the opposition in midfield is if one of the full-backs runs forwards and one of the strikers runs back and marks the opposing central midfielder.
